First I'll get into TALENT.
1 a : any of several ancient units of weight b : a unit of value equal to the value of a talent of gold or silver
2 archaic : a characteristic feature, aptitude, or disposition of a person or animal
3 : the natural endowments of a person
4 a : a special often athletic, creative, or artistic aptitude b : general intelligence or mental power : ability
5 : a person of talent or a group of persons of talent in a field or activity
A perfect and in-arguable example of movie-making-talent- is James Cameron.. He's responsible for both Titanic and Avatar - which are 1st and 2nd biggest grossing movies of all time. Personally Titanic was the first movie I saw twice in theaters, and I also saw Avatar twice before it came out in dvd. He's the god of directors. And lets not forget Terminator 1 & 2, and Aliens. Just because both aliens and robots are two of my all time favorite subjects has no bairings to his greatness. Dark City and Contact, to me, rate above his movies with the same subject - but when it comes to talent its James Cameron ALL the way.
When I say Inarguably, i mean it. His movies Titanic and Avatar take the first and second place for the highest grossing movies of all time. Meaning that out of all movies that have ever been made they have made the most money - hence being the director-god of movies. I mean it would be awesome to be the director of the movie that made more money of any other movie, but not, James Cameron not only did that, but he has the first and second top grossing movies - EVER.
That is TALENT. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about Titanic or Avatar, at all. They are techically and ... in any way you can measure a movie - perfect. He's better than Steven Spielberg and George Lucas combined -the $ proves that... He can make a movie that people want to watch.
What star wars was to the people ages ago, Avatar was to people in 2010. He showed what cgi (computer generated images) can do. He proved it's the future.
Avatars budget was the biggest ever, at 500million he knew, after Titanic he had to come back with a bang, and he did. He blew that shit up. Avatar is by far the most technically and visually adept movie ever made, hands down. There is no rival. He threw down the gauntlet and thats all there is to it.
As a TALENTED director, he's it. There is no way you can watch Avatar and not appreciate the pure grandeur that went into it.
That is TALENT. And as this post is about, Talent, as an example James Cameron takes the spot. (And on a side note his ex-wife winning the Oscar for best picture for "The Hurt Locker" is absolutely ridiculous, it's comparing apples to oranges and obviously the people who voted like oranges more than apples)
Now to get to Intelligence as it applies to movies, the movie that comes to mind and is a perfect examples is CONTACT.
The most technically acted, reality-specific, non-documentary is the Movie Contact with one of the best actresses in the entire world - Jodie Foster. It was one of the first movies to show an Active President of the United States of American - Bill Clinton in film. The movie is about Seti (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) who gets a signal that actually is from an alien origin and the potential aftermath. If you imagine this actually happening, through SETI, this is about as realistic and intelligent as it gets.
This is about as intelligent as a movie gets.
In my book, which is about the difference between Genius, Intelligence, and Talent.. If we want to get to GENIUS:
A genius (plural genii or geniuses, adjective ingenious) is an excellent intellect, excellent work or an excellent achievement. More than just originality, creativity, or intelligence, the adjective "genius" is associated with the achieving of unprecedented insight. This is called the spark of genius. The genius (the excellence, a noun) of a piece of work raises a perceiver's expectation. The use of the adjective "genius" is generalized in some instances. It is particular in other instances. It might be particular to such a discrete field as philosophy, sports, statesmanship, science or the arts.
If Avatar is an example of Talent. And Contact is an example of Intelligence. GENIUS's example would be Stanley Kubrick's
2001: A Space Odyssey: which was filmed in 1968! The visuals in this movie are even better than 2001 graphics and it's scope and story rival anything that's been produced since.
